Corfiot Flavours & Aromas
Let your senses travel!
The island of Corfu has a wide variety of local products. Some of them are traditional Corfiot products of high value and with this tour we have the chance to get to know the most famous.
First stop on our tasty trip is the factory of Tsitsibira (Ginger-beer), the well-known Heptanesian (Seven Islands) refreshment since the time of the British rule. Today is made nowhere else in the Ionian Islands, but in Corfu. Made from lemon juice, natural lemon-essence, top quality ground ginger, white raisins, water and sugar, today is prepared by a small family-industry of the island, which ‘kneads’ in its caldrons the historical refreshment.
As we drive along Ropa Valley we visit the Theotoki Estate, the winery of one of the oldest families in Corfu and one of the most ecological and peaceful spots on the island. There, we have a 20 minute tour of the winery facilities and cellar, with a detailed description of the wine and olive oil production. The tour concludes with a tasting of the Estate’s wines accompanied by a light snack.
We continue our trip to Mavromatis kumquat destilery, a family-run business, specializing in kumquat liqueurs and sweets in jars, obtained from the distillation of the unique kumquat. In a fully-organized showroom there is the impressive equipment of the old distillery and also a video projector which presents all the production stages of kumquat liqueurs and sweets. Free time to taste and buy products.
Our last stop of this tasty journey is a traditional tavern with typical Greek meals. Right next door is the tavern’s butcher shop with a wide variety of fresh meats, cheeses and cold cuts. We can shop or just pick something that suits our taste and the tavern will grill it for us.
